Play back the tape…

Scriptural Foundation:

Matthew 12:35-37 King James Version (KJV)

A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

Reflection:

I few years ago, I started really watching my words. I have never been big on curse words so that was easy to cut out whatever remained.  However, it became harder for phrases like “we can’t afford that” or “your being dramatic” or “so and so is an idiot”.  Re-read the opening passage again. Pause and think about that for a second….in the day of judgment the Lord is going to read back through the transcript of your life.  Every single word good and bad will be looked at….every single word.  That includes gossip, outburst of frustration, self-righteous talk the list goes on and on.

Thank God for his mercy and grace and that Jesus left the Holy Spirit to convict us when we say and do things not quite right. Don’t get convict confused with condemn….the devil will whisper to you that you have messed up too many times and the Lord won’t forgive you this time. The Holy Sprit convicts us so that we can change our behavior so that we can be a better witness for the Lord.  However if we choose to become dull to these promptings or have delayed responses then not only are we faulty witnesses for Christ, we are blocking our own blessings.  God has so much in store for you Beloved.  The Bible says, In 1 Corinthians 2:9 –  But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”  If you are not living up to this promise in the Bible then you maybe blocking your own blessing.  Don’t look for someone to blame, if the same cycle of events with people and situations keep happening it is good chance that it is you and your words keeping in a pit.  Don’t wait for eternity, play back the tape on your life each and every day.

Seeking Revelation:

Grab your notebook:

  • List events in your life that seem to keep happening. Things that get you upset, things that get you sad, things that get you frustrated, etc.
  • Write out for each thing without a filter what you think would resolve the issue/situation. Put the list away for a week.
  • Re-read your list and explanations. Do you still agree with everything you have written?
  • Present your list to the Holy Spirit. Does He convict you on any of your statements? If so ask Him to help you break that negative cycle.

What melody is your heart playing?

Scriptural Foundation:

Colossians 3:16 Easy-to-Ready Version (ERV)

Let the teaching of Christ live inside you richly. Use all wisdom to teach and counsel each other. Sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

Reflection:

Your life is a song and it is a melody that radiates outward (it interacts with other people) effect your environment/surroundings. This is not something that the sense realm can pick up (seeing, hearing, feeling, etc.), but is something that is in the spirit realm.  The devil has a rhythm that tries to disrupt your melody as it tries force its way inward to your mind.  These competing forces, your melody and the devil’s disruptive rhyme, if left unmanaged creates confusion in your mind.  By focusing on your melody (things that get you excited, fills you with joy, and give you purpose) you can eventually drown out this disruptive rhythm and create the change that you need to get past current negative habits and thought processes.

Dictionary.com defines melody, song, and rhyme as follows:

Song – a short poem or other set of words set to music or meant to be sung.

Melody – a sequence of single notes that is musically satisfying.

Rhyme – a strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound.

So if your life is a song that God created and you have a unique melody that the devil is trying desperately to eliminate, shouldn’t you protect that melody with all that you have?

Seeking Revelation:

Grab your notebook:

  • What hobbies or volunteer work or dreams have you set aside for the purposes of being more practical?
  • What is stopping you from returning back to it?
  • Ask the Holy Spirit which item(s) you should pick back up again.

The same yesterday, today, and forever….

Scriptural Foundation:

Hebrews 13:7-9 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

Remember your leaders and superiors in authority [for it was they] who brought to you the Word of God. Observe attentively and consider their manner of living (the outcome of their well-spent lives) and imitate their faith (heir conviction that God exists and is the Creator and Ruler of all things, the Provider and Bestower of eternal salvation through Christ, and their leaning of the entire human personality on God in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness).

Jesus Christ (the Messiah) is [always] the same, yesterday, today, [yes] and forever (to the ages).

Do not be carried about by different and varied and alien teachings; for it is good for the heart to be established and enabled and strengthened by means of grace (God’s favor and spiritual blessing) and not [to be devoted to] foods [rules of diet and ritualistic meals], which bring no [spiritual] benefit or profit to those who observe them.

Reflection:

My Pastor preached some years ago about why Believers continue to experience failure in their prayer lives. It was a simple acronym that has been burned into my heart.  The enemy forces use the D.O.C. technique – disciplined, organized, and consistent.  We live in the space of time, if we lose track of how every action in time has a ramification positive or negative in the spirit realm.  In our key scripture today, God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The Lord has been and always will be the one true measure that everything in eternity is compared to.  In order to counter that and to create doubt wherever possible, the devil has his demons torment you in disciplined, organized, and consistent manner. It is not until, you catch on to the things that distract you, annoy you, or discourage you and compare the situation or feeling to what the Word of God says that you start to catch the long-distance game that the devil is trying to play.  He is out for your soul and the seed of faith that is ignited in your heart.  If he can get you to forget about who you are in Christ then he can start causing disruption in your life and the lives of those around you.

You’re an heir to the Kingdom of God, you have to have an eternal mind frame daily. You have to look for opportunities to encourage and love on other people.  This world lacks genuine self-less love.  Everyone is looking to see how they are going to make out or come out on top.  Your calling as a Believer is to put your assignment in Christ first before your needs and trust God at His Word that He will provided from here into eternity.

Seeking Revelation:

Grab your notebook:

  • How can you apply the D.O.C technique to your prayer life?
  • Does your current confessions match your actions?
  • Determine in your heart to focus on the long-term game then the temporary.

The first shall be last and the last shall be first….

Scriptural Foundation:

Luke 10:38-42 Kings James Version (KJV)

Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.

But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Reflection:

I have always put myself last, not to be a martyr, but because I really enjoy putting my loved ones first. It wasn’t until motherhood that I noticed the manifestation of my actions – overweight, worn out outfits, hair-do always in disarray, etc.  Without realizing it, I became a role model for my children and my outward appearance didn’t match the abundance of blessing in my life.  Today’s passage is simple the perfect parable about the struggle between our flesh and our spirit. This is where I find myself in the middle of the story about Martha…I can relate very much to Martha, but I can also understand Mary’s choice to stay at the Lord’s feet. If I could I would extend my devotional time for hours and hours.  There are always so many things to look up and study in the Word and the more you seek the Lord the more He shows up.

What I found out about the assignment the Lord has put on my heart is that in order for me to be encouraging to others, I had to first encourage myself. In order to help others change their lives through the Word of God, I had to first apply the same discipline I had learned to love in the spirit in the natural realm.  I already had a blueprint in my service to others; I just had to apply it to myself.  Realizing this nugget from the word, I look for areas to apply this principle.  This could be applied to finances in that we give away all our money and always lack, if we tithe and pay ourselves first (save) before we pay our bills we will not lack for any good thing from the Lord.  This could be applied to health in that we eat junk foods, because of lack of preparation of weekly meal planning.  If we take the time to plan and make wiser choices we improve the wellbeing outlook of our entire home.  If you are like me, you have put yourself last, but the Lord wants to put you first.

Seeking Revelation:

Grab your notebook:

  • Who do you relate more to Martha or Mary?
  • Think of the areas of your life that you feel dissatisfied in.
  • Are you dissatisfied because you are putting yourself last?
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to shed light on that situation. Is there something that you are doing or not doing?

Why should the Lord bless you?

Scriptural Foundation:

Isaiah 43:26 English Standard Version (ESV)

Put me in remembrance; let us argue together; set forth your case, that you may be proved right.

Psalm 37:4-6 English Standard Version (ESV)

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.

Hebrews 11:6 English Standard Version (ESV)

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Reflection:

Growing up, I remember that my father was a very busy man. In order for him to consider my request for something, I had to prepare my argument.  It annoyed me that I had to approach him like that, but at the same time it really had me think through decisions that I was considering.  Not all my request made it to my “board room” discussions with my father, but the ones that did more often than not I was granted permission.

The answer to the title is not “because I am a nice person” or that “I try my best”. Our Father God is a purposeful and succinct being. There are a lot of dependencies in the Word of God.  You have to act on the Word of God, for our Heavenly Father to respond to our request.  If it were easy then everyone would be doing it, however the walk of a Believer is very challenging.  I remember as a newly saved Christian, still looking through the lens of a Roman Catholic I learned that all good people don’t go to heaven.  There is only one way there and that is through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  However that is not where our story ends, until we get to Heaven we will be bouncing back and forth between boot camp(the messages we receive at church) to combat (going back to our mission field to share the good news).

After years of being in the ministry, I have seen a lot of good people come and go. Let me rephrase that, I lot of great people come and go.  When it happens, the Holy Spirit brings to my remembrance the story of the rich young man (Matthew 19:16-22). He did everything he knew how to do since he was young…i.e great person. However when the Lord asked him to give up everything he possessed – But when the young man heard this, he went away sad (grieved and in much distress), for he had great possessions. We think by being a good person, we can keep all our negative thought processes and retaliatory actions separate and the Lord will bless our hearts desire.  The Bible says that the Lord is a jealous lover.  He wants to be a part of every area of your life. Then and only then after proving your case through scripture, will He grant your requests.  It is a high standard, but not an impossible standard with the help of the Holy Ghost.

Seeking Revelation:

Grab your notebook:

  • What requests that you feel have been overlooked by the Lord?
  • Study out in the Word of God for the requirements/promises for your request.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any hindrances on your end that may be causing the delay. In some cases, you mail here the dreaded four letter word…wait. Come to peace with the response and ask the Lord what you should be doing while you wait for your manifestation.

Where my dawgs at?

Scriptural Foundation:

1 Samuel 17:25-27 New Living Translation (NLT)

Have you seen the giant?” the men asked. “He comes out each day to defy Israel. The king has offered a huge reward to anyone who kills him. He will give that man one of his daughters for a wife, and the man’s entire family will be exempted from paying taxes!”

David asked the soldiers standing nearby, “What will a man get for killing this Philistine and ending his defiance of Israel? Who is this pagan Philistine anyway, that he is allowed to defy the armies of the living God?”

And these men gave David the same reply. They said, “Yes, that is the reward for killing him.”

Galatians 5:22-23 New Living Translation (NLT)

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Reflection:

Now I am the farthest thing from “thug life” as they come. However, the more heart-breaking stories I hear from women, but their husbands, children’s father, and/or boyfriends I am reminded of a main stream song that came out years ago by a rapper called DMX – Where my dawgs at?  I have no idea what was said in the song, but I remember the hook to this day from when my brother used to play it.  The whole premises I think was calling out the real men among the masses.  Either way the song created an energy that really got parties jumping.  In 1 Samuel 17, David, a mere boy on a battle field of men, questioned why wasn’t anyone silencing the bully Goliath. How could they have faith in God yet shrink back from a natural threat?

I am sure you can agree the whole planet is upside down. There are so many labels when it comes to sexuality I can’t keep up any more.  All I can speak on is my observations. Growing up my father was my hero, he still is to this day.  The sacrifices that he and my mom made for our family made me the person I am today.  I had only two male role models in my life the Lord and my father.  When I met my first and only boyfriend, I naively thought all men were built like my father….not.  This was prior to me becoming saved, but looking back I can pinpoint the certain times and situations that the Lord was warning me not to become involved with him.  Needless to say, I wasted three and half years of my life and was emotionally void.  During that time, I was saved.  I didn’t dump him the day after I got saved, but the Lord navigated me out of that pit and back on solid ground.  I did end up dumping him, praise the Lord!  In his place, the Lord sent my husband. Now granted when I considered his resume in the natural – two baby mamas, blue collar, and backslidden state, which were all things that didn’t bother me, but I didn’t know how my parents would react.  I distinctly remember introducing my ex-boyfriend (in the natural he had a good “resume”) to my parents and my father saying almost immediately when was I going to get rid of him!  The Lord told me very early on that Gary was the man I was going to marry.  So it was only confirmation when the time came to meet my parents, there was not a negative word spoken to me about him, which was huge!  Almost fourteen years later, it is still the best thing that ever happened to me.

Looking around at my friends, co-workers and family members, I feel like I got one of the last of the “good ones.” Not that my husband is perfect…..nor am I, but we are certainly one.  With the Lord at the center of our relationship, we have had one argument on record.  You might say that I must be exaggerating, but literally we have had one verbal disagreement.  Don’t get me wrong we don’t see eye to eye on everything, but we agree to disagree in love.  The Bible says in Ephesians 4:26-27 And “don’t sin by letting anger control you. ”Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

Saints, the Lord loves you too much for your relationship with your spouse to be anything but battle tested and strong. Your home is your Eden on earth.  It should remain in peace at all times and the inhabitants should be honest, respectful and be full of love towards one another.  Your home should be the first cultivating ground for the fruits of the Spirit.  If the fruits can’t grow and thrive in your Eden then you all have allowed the serpent in.  Selah….

Seeking Revelation:

Grab your notebook:

  • Start with listing out your negative behaviors. If you need help, ask your significant other with the promise that you will not throw it back in their face. Siblings or long-time friends are also good at letting you know when you are wrong.
  • Ask the Holy Spirt to take away any offense that may try to pop up and objectively look at your list. Apply where needed the fruits of the Spirit to each item. When the next opportunity presents itself pick from your fruit basket rather than having a knee jerk reaction.
  • Please note I didn’t start with what you think is wrong about your significant other. If you can take care of the serpent behavior in your actions that may produce a change in your partner, the Lord will take care of his/her behavior without you having to say or do anything.

Remember the end game….

Scriptural Foundation:

John 21:15-17 New Living Translation (NLT)

After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.”

“Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him.

Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

“Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.”

“Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said.

A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.

Reflection:

One day the Holy Spirit asked me, “If all your needs were met by this world would you ever turn to Me?’ Now my heart wanted to yes, but my soul and flesh knew the answer was no. When I was growing up, my parents provided all that I needed in life and I got most of what I wanted too.  I went to church, because that is what one is supposed to do.  That mechanical relationship with the Lord, served me well when I was under my parents’ care, it was when I started making decisions for myself that I found out that I wasn’t equipped for this life.  Now I didn’t go through anything horrific as a child or teenager, we just moved around a lot due to my father’s job transfers.  If anything, it helped me to be social, because I was always meeting new people.  Suddenly, it was a struggle satisfying my needs and more often than not I would just forget about what I wanted in life.  It got to a point that I lost my joy…..I have always been a pretty up beat person, but the heart satisfying joy of feeling secure was gone.

So, when the Holy Spirit asked that question, it immediately made me think about the Lord’s interaction with Peter. Jesus asked Peter three times if he love Him.  Peter had the audacity to be hurt that the Lord kept asking the same question.  However only a few days earlier Peter with all his needs met by Jesus’ ministry at the time denied that he even knew his Savior.  It is not until we are empty of ourselves that the Lord can truly trust us to love Him.  Not to say material things are bad, however the importance that is placed on possessions and comforts over your relationship with the Lord will leave you spiritually bankrupt.  If you are bankrupt in the spirit, you will soon be bankrupted in the natural.  A person can be surrounded by the finest things in life and still be unsatisfied.  Why is that? The Lord made us to be vessels to pour out love on and feed the lost ship of this world.  Don’t settle for being unsatisfied.

Seeking Revelation:

Grab your notebook:

  • List the areas in your life that are satisfying and then the areas that are unsatisfied.
  • Then list out your needs and wants under the categories of satisfied or unsatisfied.
  • Present your list to the Lord. Meditate on why you classify things a certain way and ask the Holy Spirit for clarity as to the areas where you are denying God’s love for you.
  • Equip with this new found knowledge, endeavor to change for the better.

Coloring outside the lines…

Scriptural Foundation:

Ecclesiastes 3:11 New Living Translation (NLT)

Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.

Matthew 19:14 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

He said, Leave the children alone! Allow the little ones to come to Me, and do not forbid or restrain or hinder them, for of such [as these] is the kingdom of heaven composed.

Isaiah 55:8-9 Amplified Bible Classic Edition (AMPC)

My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the Lord.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.

Reflection:

My youngest daughter comes running up to me. Her face totally radiant as she proudly shows me her hand drawn picture! It was quite colorful; however she totally disregarded any of the lines.  I made much of her and then she ran off to show Daddy her master piece.  It made me start thinking how as young children we are in encouraged to color within the lines.  It makes the picture “prettier”; we have to make sure that we use the right colors to make the picture “look right”; and last but not least we have to hang it up next to our peers to see who did “the best job”.  It sounds like a simple thing, but isn’t. Everything in life is pretty simple….that is of course before we start interacting with others.

The bottom line as children we start off with an imagination for the purposes of catching the Lord’s vision for our life as we grow older. That vision will go against the rationale of this life.  In the perfect, God will be coloring outside the lines of life as you know it! It may look messy to others, but that is because they haven’t realized or caught the larger vision that the Lord has for your life.  In that larger vision, all the colors are in place and that picture is a masterpiece that you will present to the Lord when you get to Heaven.

Now this doesn’t mean that children are to rule the world. We as parents must be the Godly example so that they accept the Lord soon rather than later in life.  As adults, we must learn not to lean on our own understanding, but remember we are children in the eyes of the Lord.  I heard a pastor say “the opposite of faith is certainty”.  If you have your life figured out without God you are more than likely coloring within the lines.  Seek the Lord and find out what true freedom feels like.

Seeking Revelation:

Grab your notebook:

  • Look back over the course of life. What are dreams that you have abandoned?
  • Why did you do that?
  • Ask the Lord if you should pick up that dream again.

Weeds, weeds, everywhere….

Scriptural Foundation:

Luke 8:5-8 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)

A farmer went out to sow seed. While he was scattering the seed, some of it fell beside the road. People walked on the seed, and the birds ate it all. Other seed fell on rock. It began to grow but then died because it had no water. Some other seed fell among thorny weeds. This seed grew, but later the weeds stopped the plants from growing. The rest of the seed fell on good ground. This seed grew and made 100 times more grain.”

Jesus finished the story. Then he called out, “You people who hear me, listen!”

 Luke 8: 14 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)

“What about the seed that fell among the thorny weeds? That is like the people who hear God’s teaching, but they let the worries, riches, and pleasures of this life stop them from growing. So they never produce a crop.

Reflection:

In or around the second week in June, it never fails, every year our front yard overnight becomes over run with weeds. It is like time and space speeds up in a blink of an eye.  Our subdivision was built in the middle of a forest…that is a romantic idea…until we bagged about thirty plus bags of leaves our first fall.  One moment the trees are budding and the next moment my husband and I are dragging many big bags of weeds to the curb…and that is just the front yard.  This past year it was the worst, because it was our first year since we purchased this home a couple of years ago that we’re clearing out the gutters….did I mention that we lived in a forest…. There was so much debris that were in the gutters, but the worst one was one in the front of the house…the one that inspired this post.

I looked up one day and saw tall weeds growing in gutter! When my husband climbed up there, he found that the gutter was overflowing with soil…basically a make shift flower basket.  It was evident that this particular gutter hadn’t been cleaned out for several seasons.  The Lord spoke to my heart and said “My children maintain their hearts like you do your yard.”  Well since, we do weeding about twice over the spring and summer months, He got my attention.  As with everything, I asked Him to give me a scripture. The Holy Spirit brought me to Luke’s gospel. As Believers, we have an obligation as ambassadors for Christ to main a constant connection with the Lord.  Similar to the constant care one need to have when maintaining flower beds in ones yard……sure, you can get by a couple of weeks without weeding, however eventually it will affect the appearance of your yard or in the spirit realm your witnessing for Christ.  Suddenly it takes you twice as long to clean up/catch up, than just doing a little bit daily.  Due to exhaustion, frustration, impatience or all of the above at some point we may look to cut corners to get the faster results. From afar the yard (aka our lives) looks good, but at close observations looks rough at untidy. The Lord is calling for all of us to take an assessment of our hearts and pluck out anything that is not beneficial to the advancement of the Kingdom.  Will that mean that you have to be more attentive in your daily walk…yes!  However, I promise you your life will never be the same.

Seeking Revelation:

Grab your notebook:

  • Ask the Holy Spirit to identify what areas of your life are over run with weeds.
  • Think back, how did things get into this state?
  • Ask the Holy Spirit what you can do in these areas to better maintain your spiritual walk/witness.

When the fire is the hottest…

Scriptural Foundation:

Daniel 3:17-18 New Living Translation (NLT)

If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.”

1 Peter 1:6-7 New Living Translation (NLT)

So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

Reflection:

In certain seasons of my life I have felt totally consumed by fire. I was constantly second guessing myself.  Did I say something or do something out of the will of God? I was doing everything to the best of my ability, asking the Holy Spirit daily what did I do to deserve this?  When the fire burns the hottest I have learned over time to hide in the secret place of the Most High.  What you need to understand is that consistently following Jesus will cause us to go through some things.  However the key word is to go through things.  Think about the process of turning clay into a beautiful teapot.  It requires that the potter mode the clay into a vessel and then place it in a kiln to keep that shape.  Then paint is applied and back goes the vessel into the kiln.  The Lord is the potter and we are the clay.  The process may not be the most ideal, but in the end, if we don’t lose heart, we become a beautiful vessel for the Kingdom of God.

I can hear some of you now….she doesn’t know what I am going through. You’re absolutely right I don’t know what you are going through, but I know who does, the Lord.  And if the Lord is for you who can be against you? So remember when you feel like you are melting under the pressure of the current moment, the Lord is using that situation for you to be strong and more radiant in His presence.  In times like those, we all need to cling to the only thing that can save us, the Word of God.

Seeking Revelation:

Grab your notebook:

  • Recall all your past furnace experiences
  • Describe for each, what was the end product after that trial
  • List everything you are facing today.
  • Print out Daniel 3:17-18 and put it on your bathroom mirror, confess this scripture over yourself daily until the Lord manifests in that situation.
